You finally got your amateur radio license and you’re absolutely buzzing to make your first contact. You’ve spent weeks studying regulations, practicing with your equipment, and memorizing call signs.

But then you key up the mic and suddenly freeze because you realize you have absolutely no idea what to actually say or how to behave on the air.

I’ve watched countless new operators struggle with this exact moment. They know the technical stuff cold, they can recite frequency allocations in their sleep, but when it comes to the actual social protocols of ham radio communication, they’re completely lost.

This creates real frustration because nobody wants to be “that operator” who accidentally breaks unwritten rules or annoys everyone on the repeater.

Ham radio etiquette has evolved carefully over more than a century of radio operation. These protocols exist to maximize spectrum efficiency, minimize interference, build international friendships, and make the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone involved.

In this article, I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know about proper ham radio etiquette. We’ll cover the basic principles, specific protocols for different modes and situations, common mistakes that even experienced operators make, and how to navigate the sometimes-tricky social dynamics of amateur radio.

By the time you finish reading, you’ll have the confidence to key up that mic and talk like a seasoned pro.

The Fundamental Principle: Listen First

Before we dive into specific protocols, I need to emphasize the single most important rule in amateur radio: always listen before you send. I cannot stress this enough.

This goes beyond simple courtesy. Listening first is absolutely essential to preventing interference and demonstrating that you actually understand how to share spectrum responsibly.

When I first got my license, I was so keen to make contacts that I’d sometimes jump on a frequency after only listening for maybe ten or fifteen seconds. Big mistake.

I interrupted ongoing conversations more than once, and let me tell you, the embarrassment of having someone politely but firmly tell you that the frequency is in use stays with you. You don’t forget that quickly.

Experienced operators typically listen for at least thirty seconds to several minutes before attempting to use a frequency. This extended listening period serves many critical purposes.

First, it prevents you from interfering with weak or distant signals that you might not immediately hear clearly. Propagation conditions vary constantly, and what sounds like dead air might actually be hosting a weak signal from halfway around the world that only certain stations can receive.

If you send without adequate listening, you could wipe out someone’s once-in-a-lifetime contact with a rare DX station.

Second, extended listening allows you to understand the nature of any ongoing communications. Maybe there’s a casual contact happening, or an emergency situation, or a contest operation, or a formal net.

Each of these scenarios needs different behavior from you if you need to use that frequency or nearby frequencies.

Third, listening gives you context for how to appropriately intervene if you genuinely need to use that frequency. You’ll understand whether the current users are wrapping up or just getting started, whether they’re having technical difficulties that might make them receptive to assistance, or whether they’re clearly settled in for an extended conversation.

The listen-first principle extends beyond just your initial frequency selection too. If you’ve been transmitting on a frequency and then take a break, maybe you stepped away to grab coffee or deal with something at home, you need to verify the frequency is still clear before resuming.

Other stations may have legitimately begun using that frequency during your absence, and they have every right to continue their contact.

You can’t just assume the frequency stays yours indefinitely because you were there first.

I’ve noticed that violations of the listen-first rule are one of the quickest ways to identify inexperienced operators. Jumping on frequencies without adequate listening shows a basic lack of understanding about how amateur radio actually works as a shared resource.

The spectrum doesn’t belong to any person operator. It belongs to all of us collectively, and we all have a responsibility to use it thoughtfully.

When you fail to listen first, you’re basically announcing to everyone that you don’t understand or don’t care about this fundamental principle.

The listening period also gives you valuable information about current band conditions. You’ll hear how signals sound, whether there’s significant QRM (interference) or QRN (static), and what kinds of contacts are successfully being made.

This information helps you decide whether that frequency and mode will actually work for what you want to accomplish.

Some operators treat the listen-first rule as a suggestion as opposed to a requirement, especially during contests when they’re trying to maximize contact rates. This creates tension in the amateur radio community because contest operators sometimes behave as though speed and efficiency trump all other considerations.

But even during contests, proper listening prevents most interference issues and actually improves your overall efficiency by preventing wasted time dealing with conflicts.

Station Identification Protocol

Station identification represents both a legal requirement and a basic courtesy in amateur radio. In the United States, FCC regulations mandate that you identify your station every ten minutes during a contact and at the conclusion of your transmission.

Most other countries have really similar requirements, though the specific timing and format can vary somewhat. The general principle stays consistent worldwide: you must identify yourself at regular intervals and when signing off.

Proper identification means using your finish call sign with standard phonetics at a moderate speed. If conditions are poor or you’re working DX, you should definitely repeat your call sign to confirm it’s properly received. When you’re operating portable or mobile, you need to include the suitable indicator, like “W1ABC stroke M” for mobile operation or “W1ABC stroke 7” when operating temporarily in the seventh call district.

The phonetic alphabet is absolutely critical here. The International Civil Aviation Organization standardized these phonetics specifically to improve clarity in difficult communication conditions.

Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.

Learn them, use them consistently, and don’t make up your own creative alternatives.

I’ve heard operators use things like “Buffalo” instead of Bravo or “Nora” instead of November, and while these might seem clearer to you in the moment, they actually create confusion because they’re non-standard. The whole point of standardized phonetics is that everyone worldwide recognizes them immediately.

When you deviate from the standard, you’re introducing ambiguity. The person receiving your call sign might wonder whether you said “Buffalo” as a substitute phonetic or whether your call sign actually contains a reference to the city.

This wastes time and creates unnecessary complexity.

Regional phonetics exist in some areas. British operators sometimes use slightly different phonetics than North American operators.

Some countries have their own traditional phonetics that predate the ICAO standard.

While these are legitimate within their contexts, using the international standard confirms most clarity when working stations from different regions.

Common identification mistakes include rushing through your call sign so fast that it becomes completely unintelligible, using non-standard phonetics that create confusion, failing to identify when legally required, and over-identifying by unnecessarily announcing your call sign so often that it disrupts the natural flow of conversation. There’s really a balance to strike here.

I’ve been in contacts where the other operator announced their call sign after literally every sentence. “The weather here is beautiful today, this is W1ABC.” “I’ve been licensed for five years, W1ABC.” “My antenna is a dipole, W1ABC.” This excessive identification makes the conversation choppy and awkward.

The legal requirement is every ten minutes, not every ten seconds.

Station identification serves many purposes beyond just legal compliance. It allows other operators to verify exactly who they’re communicating with, which matters for logging accuracy and potential interference resolution.

It enables proper logging for awards and record-keeping, ensuring that contact confirmations match the actual stations involved. And it maintains accountability for transmission content, because your call sign connects you personally to everything you say on the air.

In the amateur radio community, your call sign represents your reputation. How you identify, when you identify, and the clarity of your identification all contribute to how other operators perceive you.

Sloppy identification suggests sloppy operating practices generally.

Precise, clear identification shows professionalism and respect for the service.

Some newer operators feel self-conscious about their call signs, especially if they have recently received a call sign that’s longer or less desirable than they’d like. They might rush through it or mumble it, hoping nobody pays too much attention.

This is exactly the wrong approach.

Own your call sign. Say it clearly and proudly.

Everyone started somewhere, and call signs don’t decide operator quality.

The Art of Calling CQ

Calling CQ invites any station to respond and make contact with you. It seems simple on the surface, but there’s actually a proper procedure that shows respect for others’ time and spectrum use.

Getting this right makes a huge difference in whether you successfully make contacts or just annoy everyone listening.

First, you need to verify that the frequency is actually clear through extended listening. We already covered the listen-first principle, but it’s especially important before calling CQ because you’re essentially claiming that frequency for your use.

After you’ve listened carefully for at least a minute, you should explicitly ask if the frequency is in use.

Something like “Is this frequency in use?” or “Is fourteen point two five zero in use?” works perfectly. The specific frequency mention helps because someone monitoring that frequency who might be taking a break from an ongoing contact can respond to let you know they’re using it.

Then you wait five to ten seconds for a response. This pause is really important because there might be a station with weaker signals that you didn’t hear clearly during your initial listening period, or someone might be in the middle of receiving a transmission on a different frequency in a split operation.

If nobody responds indicating the frequency is occupied, then you can proceed with your CQ call. But before you do, take one more moment to listen again. I know this seems excessive, but you’d be surprised how often a signal appears right in that final moment before you send.

A proper CQ call follows this format: “CQ CQ CQ, this is Whiskey One Alpha Bravo Charlie, Whiskey One Alpha Bravo Charlie, standing by.”

Notice the structure here. You say CQ three times to catch attention.

Operators who are casually tuning across the band will recognize the repeated CQ as someone looking for contacts.

Then you identify yourself using phonetics twice for clarity. The repetition confirms that even if someone misses part of your call sign the first time, they’ll catch it on the second.

Then you explicitly state that you’re standing by for responses.

The repetition serves deliberate purposes. Radio signals fade, interference comes and goes, and the person hearing your call might be adjusting their receiver or dealing with local noise.

Repeating key information maximizes the chances that your finish message gets through.

You should pause five to ten seconds between CQ sequences. This gives stations time to respond and prevents you from transmitting continuously in a way that makes it impossible for anyone to break in. Some operators make the mistake of calling CQ for thirty or forty-five seconds straight without any pauses.

By the time they finally stop transmitting and listen, many stations might be trying to respond simultaneously, creating a pile-up situation that could have been avoided.

Generally speaking, you should limit your CQ calling to a reasonable duration, usually about two to three minutes maximum. If you’re not getting any responses after that time, it’s better to QSY (change frequency) as opposed to persisting endlessly on a frequency that’s clearly not productive.

There are several possible reasons you might not get responses to a CQ call. The band might be dead because of poor propagation conditions.

The frequency might have interference that you can’t hear but others can.

Your signal might not be getting out effectively because of antenna or equipment issues. Or there might simply be nobody listening at that moment who wants to make a contact.

Whatever the reason, continuing to call CQ indefinitely on a frequency that’s not producing results wastes your time and occupies spectrum that someone else might use more productively. After a few minutes, move on and try a different frequency or different band.

There are variations for specific purposes too. If you’re specifically looking for DX contacts, you can call “CQ DX” which solicits only distant or international contacts as opposed to local ones.

This signals to stations within your own country or nearby regions that they shouldn’t respond because you’re specifically seeking long-distance communications.

You can also specify geographical areas with calls like “CQ North America” or “CQ USA” or “CQ Europe.” This targeting helps when you’re working on awards that need contacts with specific regions, or when you’re specifically interested in communicating with operators from certain areas.

During contests, you’d call “CQ contest” to show you’re participating in contest operations. This let’s other operators know that you’re looking for quick exchange-type contacts as opposed to extended conversations.

It also signals that you’ll be following contest protocols, which differ from casual operating procedures.

The key thing to avoid is long, rambling CQ calls. I’ve heard operators go on for literally minutes about their equipment, location, weather conditions, and life story before they even pause to see if anyone wants to respond.

This approach is terrible etiquette for many reasons. First, you’re occupying the frequency for an extended period without even knowing if anyone wants to talk to you.

Second, you’re making it impossible for anyone to respond because you’re not pausing.

Third, you’re boring most listeners who were considering responding but decide against it because you sound long-winded. Fourth, you’re providing information that should come during the actual contact after you’ve established communication with someone.

Brevity and clarity maximize your chances of getting responses while minimizing your spectrum occupation. Save the detailed conversation for after you’ve actually made contact with someone who wants to hear it.

Your tone and pacing during a CQ call matter too. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace.

Don’t rush, but don’t drag it out either.

Sound friendly and approachable. The way you deliver your CQ call gives potential respondents their first impression of you.

If you sound bored, annoyed, or impatient, people are less likely to want to engage with you.

Responding to CQ Calls

When you hear a CQ call that you want to answer, proper etiquette involves specific timing and format. You need to wait until the calling station has completely finished their CQ and explicitly stated they’re standing by or said something similar.

Jumping in before they’re done is incredibly rude and creates interference. You’re basically talking over them, which defeats the entire purpose of their CQ call.

When you do respond, you should send only your call sign, repeated once or twice. That’s it.

Don’t add signal reports, don’t mention your location, don’t start chatting about the weather. Just your call sign with phonetics.

Something like “Kilo Seven Delta Echo Foxtrot, Kilo Seven Delta Echo Foxtrot” is perfect.

The reason for this simplicity is that there might be many stations responding simultaneously, especially if the calling station has a strong signal or is in a desirable location. The calling station needs to pick out person call signs from potentially overlapping transmissions.

If you’re transmitting extra information, you’re making their job harder and reducing the chances they’ll actually hear your call sign clearly. They’re listening for call signs specifically, and any extra content dilutes the clarity of that information.

If many stations do respond simultaneously and the calling station doesn’t hear you initially, don’t immediately repeat your call. They may be responding to another station whose call sign they caught.

Let them finish that exchange.

They’ll come back with another “standing by” or “QRZ?” when they’re ready for extra responses.

When you do try again after not being picked initially, consider using slightly different timing or clearer phonetics to improve your chances of being heard. If you called right at the beginning of the response period, try waiting a second or two longer.

If you used rapid-fire phonetics, slow down and enunciate more clearly.

I’ve made the mistake of calling too aggressively when I first started operating. I’d hear a CQ, immediately respond, not get picked, then call again and again every time there was even a brief pause.

This approach is really annoying behavior and it actually reduces your chances of making the contact. You come across as impatient and inconsiderate.

The calling station might specifically avoid you because your behavior suggests you’ll be difficult to work with during the actual contact.

Patience is absolutely a virtue in amateur radio. The calling station will work everyone who responds if they can.

Repeatedly hammering your call sign every few seconds doesn’t move you up in the queue.

It just irritates everyone involved.

If the calling station works several other stations and still hasn’t called you despite your repeated tries, consider the possibility that they’re not hearing you at all. Maybe your signal isn’t getting to them effectively.

Maybe there’s some directional propagation effect that favors other stations.

Rather than continuing to call endlessly, it might be more productive to move on and try different contacts.

When you finally do get picked by the calling station, they’ll come back with something like “Kilo Seven Delta Echo Foxtrot, this is Whiskey One Alpha Bravo Charlie, thanks for the call.” At this point, you can begin the actual exchange of information including signal reports, locations, names, and whatever else you want to talk about.

Breaking Into Existing Contacts

Sometimes you need to interrupt an ongoing QSO, maybe to join the conversation, pass along important information, or handle an emergency. How you do this matters enormously, and there are different protocols depending on your purpose.

For casual conversations where you’d like to join in, you wait for a clear pause in the transmission, then simply say “break” or just your call sign once. That’s the signal.

Then you wait for acknowledgment from the stations now in contact. They might say “go ahead break” or “go ahead with your call sign” or something similar.

This acknowledgment gives you permission to proceed.

If they ignore your break try, don’t keep hammering it. They heard you.

They’re choosing not to thank you, which means they don’t want extra participants in their conversation.

Respect that decision and move on.

When you do get acknowledged, you identify yourself fully and state your purpose. Something like “This is Whiskey One Alpha Bravo Charlie, I’d like to join the conversation if that’s alright” works well.

This polite approach shows respect for the ongoing contact while expressing your interest.

The stations might welcome you enthusiastically, or they might politely show they’d prefer to continue their two-way contact. Either response is legitimate.

Not every conversation is open to extra participants, and you need to respect that some operators are having essentially private conversations on public frequencies.

For emergency or priority traffic, the protocol is different and much more assertive. You say “Break break break, emergency traffic” or “Priority, priority, priority” depending on the urgency level.

Emergency communications always take absolute precedence over everything else in amateur radio. All stations must immediately yield and go silent when they hear an emergency declaration.

This is non-negotiable.

When you declare emergency traffic, you’re invoking a protocol that gives you finish control of that frequency. The stations before using it will go silent, and everyone monitoring will stand by to assist if needed. Because this is such a powerful intervention, you should only use it for genuine emergencies involving immediate threats to life or property.

Priority traffic falls one step below emergency but still takes precedence over routine communications. This might include important health and welfare messages, urgent operational traffic, or time-sensitive public service communications.

Priority traffic should still be used sparingly and only when genuinely warranted.

For technical or informational contributions where you have something relevant to add but don’t necessarily want to join the conversation long-term, you can say “break with information” or “comment.” This signals that you have something brief to contribute.

When acknowledged, you share your information concisely and then typically clear the frequency to let the original conversation resume. For example, if two stations are discussing a particular antenna and you have direct experience with that exact model, you might break in with information about its characteristics or performance, then sign off to let them continue their discussion.

Poor break-in etiquette includes breaking in without any valid reason, making extended interruptions when you said you just had a brief comment, repeatedly trying to break in after not being acknowledged the first time, and breaking in just to socialize without being invited.

I remember once breaking into what I thought was a casual technical discussion because I had experience with the exact antenna they were discussing. Turns out it was actually two old friends catching up who were using the technical topic as a jumping-off point for their conversation.

They were polite about it, but I could tell my interruption wasn’t really welcome. I shared my information quickly and cleared the frequency, but I felt awkward about the whole thing.

I learned to be more careful about reading the situation before jumping into conversations.

The tone and context of ongoing conversations provide clues about whether breaks would be welcome. If the stations sound like they’re having a formal technical discussion or an informal net-type operation, breaks with relevant information might be appreciated. If they sound like old friends catching up with personal news and reminiscences, they probably want to keep it between themselves.

Signal Reports and the RST System

Signal reports using the RST system (Readability, Strength, Tone) provide standardized feedback that helps operators understand how well their signals are being received. This system was introduced in 1934 and has stood the test of time because it works really effectively.

For readability, you use a scale from one to five. One means unreadable, two means barely readable with occasional words distinguishable, three means readable with considerable difficulty, four means readable with practically no difficulty, and five means perfectly readable.

These aren’t subjective impressions based on how you feel about the contact. They’re specific assessments of how clearly you can understand the content of the transmission.

A readability of three means you’re catching most of what they’re saying but having to fill in gaps and really concentrate.

A readability of five means you could write down everything they say word-for-word without any effort.

For strength, you use a scale from one to nine. One means faint signals that are barely perceptible, somewhere right at the edge of your receiver’s ability to detect them.

The scale progresses through very weak, weak, fair, fairly good, good, moderately strong, strong, and finally nine for extremely strong signals.

This assessment should be based on your receiver’s S-meter reading combined with your actual ability to hear the signal above noise. Don’t just read off the S-meter without considering how the signal actually sounds.

Sometimes signals show strong S-meter readings but sound weak or distorted because of interference or propagation effects.

The tone rating, from one to nine, applies only to CW (Morse code) operations and assesses the quality of the transmitted tone. A tone rating of one means very rough or broad signal with a lot of key clicks or other problems.

A tone of nine means a perfect, pure, musical tone without any chirp, drift, or other defects.

For voice contacts, you just use RS without the tone component. A typical excellent voice signal report would be “five nine” meaning perfectly readable and extremely strong.

A marginal contact might be “three five” meaning readable with considerable difficulty and fairly good strength.

Here’s the thing though: honest signal reporting is absolutely critical. There’s a really unfortunate tendency in amateur radio to give inflated signal reports, with operators saying “you’re five nine” when signals are actually marginal or barely readable.

This practice, while perhaps well-intentioned as a form of politeness, actually undermines the entire purpose of the RST system.

Inflated signal reports provide false technical feedback that prevents operators from optimizing their stations. If you tell someone their signal is excellent when it’s actually weak and distorted, they have no idea they need to check their equipment or adjust their setup.

They might have a problem with their antenna, their transmitter, or their audio chain that they could fix if they knew about it.

False signal reports corrupt propagation data that’s valuable for understanding band conditions. If someone is studying propagation patterns and everyone’s telling them their signals are 59 when they’re actually 33, they’re getting useless information that doesn’t reflect reality.

Dishonest reporting reduces the meaningfulness of the RST system to the point where many operators just ignore signal reports entirely because they assume everyone’s lying anyway. This is tragic because signal reports could provide genuinely useful information if people would just be honest.

I make a point of giving accurate signal reports even when they’re not ideal. If someone’s signal is three by five (readable with considerable difficulty and fairly good strength), I tell them that honestly.

I’ll explain what I’m hearing: “Your signal is strong enough but you’re getting significant distortion on your audio” or “Your signal is readable but fading badly, probably because of flutter.”

Most operators actually appreciate honest feedback because it helps them improve their stations. They might adjust their microphone gain, check their antenna connections, or try a different mode if the current one isn’t working well.

The few who get offended by anything less than perfect reports are typically operators who don’t really understand what the system is for. They view signal reports as compliments as opposed to technical information.

This misunderstanding is unfortunate but not your problem.

Continue giving honest reports regardless.

Some operators have adopted a modified approach where they give the actual signal report and mention that the contact is perfectly workable despite less-than-perfect numbers. Something like “You’re running about four by six, but that’s solid copy and we’ll have no problems with this contact.” This thanks the reality while reassuring the other operator that communication will work fine.

Repeater Etiquette

Repeaters extend communication range on VHF and UHF bands by receiving signals on one frequency and simultaneously retransmitting them on another. They’re typically installed on elevated locations like mountains or tall buildings and maintained by clubs or people at considerable expense and effort.

Understanding repeater etiquette is essential if you’re going to operate on VHF or UHF bands. Most repeaters are open to all licensed amateurs, though some need membership in the sponsoring organization, CTCSS or DCS access tones, or permission from trustees.

You need to find out the specific requirements for any repeater you want to use. This information is usually available through repeater directories, club websites, or by asking local operators.

Don’t just assume a repeater is open access and start using it without checking.

Proper repeater identification includes using the repeater’s call sign when required, though this is usually handled automatically by the repeater itself. Most modern repeaters include automated identification that announces the call sign at regular intervals as required by regulations.

You still need to identify your own station according to normal requirements. Don’t assume the repeater’s identification covers you.

It doesn’t.

You’re required to identify your transmissions separately.

It’s sometimes helpful to thank the repeater location, especially if you’re in an area with many repeaters that might cause confusion. Something like “via the Mount Wilson repeater” helps other stations know which repeater you’re accessing, which can matter for coordination and coverage planning.

Modern repeaters include courtesy tones, those beeps that show when one transmission has ended and another may begin. Proper timing is absolutely critical here.

You need to wait for the courtesy tone before transmitting. The courtesy tone signals that the repeater has reset and is ready for the next transmission.

If you send before the courtesy tone, you might cut off the end of the previous transmission or prevent the repeater from resetting properly.

After the courtesy tone sounds, pause an extra one to two seconds to allow for break-ins. This brief pause gives anyone who wants to break into the conversation with emergency traffic or brief comments the opportunity to do so.

You should keep your person transmissions to a reasonable length, typically thirty to forty-five seconds maximum. Long-winded transmissions monopolize the repeater and make it impossible for others to use it or for emergency traffic to break in.

Between transmissions, you need to completely release your push-to-talk button to allow the repeater to reset. Some operators develop a bad habit of holding down their PTT button while they think about what to say next.

This keeps the repeater keyed up unnecessarily and prevents proper operation.

Time-out timers prevent single operators from monopolizing repeaters by cutting off transmissions that exceed a certain duration, usually between one and three minutes. If you hit the time-out timer, you need to stop transmitting immediately and wait for the reset period (typically ten to thirty seconds) before resuming.

Better yet, if your conversation is going to be extended, you should really consider moving to simplex to free up the repeater for others. Repeaters exist to facilitate communications that wouldn’t otherwise be possible because of terrain or distance limitations.

If you can talk directly without the repeater, you should.

Moving to simplex for extended conversations shows respect for the repeater resource and consideration for other users who might need it. You and your conversation partner can switch to a simplex frequency and continue talking as long as you want without tying up the repeater.

Kerchunking, which means keying the repeater without identifying or speaking, is universally considered terrible etiquette. It wastes electricity and equipment life, interrupts ongoing communications, violates identification requirements, and annoys everyone listening.

The only somewhat acceptable reasons to activate a repeater without extended communication are radio checks or brief testing after technical modifications, and even these should be minimized and always include proper identification.

I learned about kerchunking the hard way when I was first starting out. I’d test my radio by just quickly hitting the repeater to hear the courtesy tone, confirming I was accessing it successfully.

Someone finally got on and politely explained that if I needed to test, I should at least identify with something like “W1ABC, radio check.” Even better would be to find another operator and ask them for a proper radio check with signal report feedback.

That was a really valuable lesson in respecting shared resources. The repeater doesn’t exist for my personal testing convenience.

It exists to facilitate communication among all licensed operators in the area.

Net Operations

Formal nets are scheduled on-air meetings with specific purposes, and they have really strict protocols that you need to follow. The Net Control Station, abbreviated as NCS, has finish authority during net operations.

Their job is to direct traffic, recognize participants, maintain order, and keep everything organized and efficient. When NCS says something, you follow those instructions without question or argument.

Remember that other people are waiting for their turn, and the net probably has a scheduled end time. Many nets run for one hour with specific agendas to accomplish.

If person participants use excessive time, the net might not finish its intended purpose.

Emergency or priority traffic can break in at any time regardless of net protocol, because emergency communications always take precedence over everything else in amateur radio. Even during a structured net with strict procedures, a station with emergency traffic simply announces “Emergency traffic” and immediately takes control.

This entire process takes maybe ten or fifteen seconds on the calling frequency, then the conversation continues elsewhere. That’s how it should work.

DX windows and exclusive frequency segments are internationally recognized for long-distance communication. You should avoid using these for local contacts because they’re specifically set aside to provide international operators access to global communications.

DX windows exist because operators in certain parts of the world have limited spectrum allocations or difficult propagation conditions. The DX window provides them a specific place where they can reasonably expect to find and work stations from other continents.

If you’re in North America and you use the DX window to have a casual conversation with someone in the next state over, you’re being selfish and inconsiderate. You have the entire rest of the band available for domestic contacts.

Use it.

Additionally, some frequencies are designated for specific services like radioteletype, FT8 and other digital mode centers, slow-scan television, and AM mode segments.

FT8, for example, uses very specific frequencies on each band. On 20 meters, the primary FT8 frequency is 14.074 MHz.

Everyone using FT8 on 20 meters needs to be on or very near that frequency for the mode to work effectively.

You can’t just decide to operate FT8 somewhere else on the band because you feel like it.

You should hold your microphone about one to two inches from your mouth. Too close and you’ll get excessive plosives and breath sounds.

Speak across the microphone as opposed to directly into it. This reduces plosive sounds from letters like P and B that can cause sharp peaks in your audio that distort or cause splatter.

Use normal conversational volume without shouting. Your microphone and transmitter are designed to handle normal speech levels.

Silence during a radio transmission doesn’t create the same social awkwardness as silence during an in-person conversation. It’s perfectly acceptable to pause while you collect your thoughts.

There’s no need to run hundreds of watts when many operators successfully work the world with 5 or 10 watts. Using excessive power is actually considered poor etiquette and shows you don’t understand how the mode works.

You cannot manually send in out-of-sequence time slots. The software manages timing automatically, but some operators try to override it, creating interference.

Let the software handle the timing.
